Saw V

Just in time for Halloween another Saw movie has made its way to the big screen! Saw V was released on October 24th, 2008 with many people all around anticipating what twists and turns the writer’s will think of next. Saw V started off with one its many bloody and gut wrenching character tests of life or death. However it wasn’t long into the movie before it was right on track from where it left off in Saw IV, where we found out the Detective Hoffman might have possibly been helping Jigsaw. Throughout the movie Agent Strahm
helps to answer many questions from previous movies in his struggle and research to find out the truth about Detective Hoffman. Like all Saw movies there are many scenes that might make your stomach uneasy but it definitely isn’t as bad as Saw movies in the past. Also you can be the judge on whether or not you like the somewhat twist and abrupt way they end this movie leaving you waiting around for Saw VI.

The Secret Life of Bees

The Secret Life of Bees is a heartwarming story about a young girl Lily (Dakota Fanning) who was raised by her father and her African American housekeeper Rosalene (Jennifer Hudson) set in the times of the Civil Rights Act. After some racist acts towards Rosalene, Rosalene and Lily decide to run away in search of freedom. In a small town in South Carolina, the two find a place to stay and work at a honey farm with three sisters, played by Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo. This is a wonderful story of finding love and family when you feel like you are in a world that is cold and lost. It is a beautiful story that will make you laugh and cry, and it truly shows the power of family and love. Based of the novel by Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees is definitely the must see movie of the season!

The Prestige

“Are you watching closely?” If you are watching “The Prestige”, then you better be. “The Prestige” stars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman with excellent supporting characters provided by Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson. It was directed by the very talented Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight). “The Prestige” is about two aspiring magicians (Bale and Jackman) who share a goal of wanting to be the best magician alive. The only problem is if one of them is the best magician in the world, then where does that leave the other? The rival magicians sabotage and destroy each other as much as possible. Consequently, it takes a huge toll on each of them. “The Prestige” is full of twists and tricks to keep you guessing until the very last second. It is rated PG-13 for some violence and disturbing images, so it might not be suitable for some of the younger viewers. However, if you can sneak away from the smaller children, then this one comes highly recommended. “The Prestige” is one of those rare movies that is actually fun to watch over and over again, because each time you do, you’ll probably catch something you missed before. Don’t just rent “The Prestige”, buy it.

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing is a classic movie that was released in 1987 but has never been far from peoples minds. It is the story of Frances "Baby" Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey, who can be considered somewhat of a "daddy's girl." In this film Baby and her family take a vacation to a wealthy resort where they spend the majority of the summer. During this time Baby begins to take dances lessons from and fall for a rebellious dancer named Johnny (Patrick Swayze). This is a timeless love story of two people caught in a forbidden love, because of stereotypes, lies, and social class. With the many famous movie quotes like: "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" and "Have the time of your life" this movie will be sure to have you dancing in your seat. It is definitely a movie that everybody must see, and that some people watch time and time again!!

No Country for Old Men

"No Country for Old Men" is a thrilling crime film from the Academy Award winning Joel and Ethan Coen ("Fargo", "O' Brother Where Art Thou?", "The Big Lebowski"). It was nominated for multiple Oscars, winning the award Best Picture among three others. Based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, No Country for Old Men, is a story of a man, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), who stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong. At the scene, he finds a briefcase full of money and a truck full of drugs. He takes the money and goes on the run from a hit man named Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem). The rest of the story is an intense, three-way chase between Moss, Chigurh, and a local sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones). The Coen Brothers deliver yet another instant classic with "No Country for Old Men", captivating the audience from start to finish. Although the film is not entirely action packed, it is sure to keep most anyone's eyes glued to the screen. "No Country for Old Men" is much more than just two hours of entertainment. It is the kind of film that will be considered one of the greatest of our time by the next generation.

Top Gun

"Top Gun" is a film from Tony Scott ("Enemy of the State", "True Romance"). It stars Top Cruise as a young pilot trainee in the Navy. He and his co-pilot, Goose (Anthony Edwards are quickly rising as the best team in the Navy training program. Through many trials and certainly a few errors, Maverick (Cruise) spends the movie finding out what it takes to be a true Navy pilot. "Top Gun" is a decent and certainly entertaining film, though in many parts, it falls prey to many 80's cliches. From music choices to some of the dialogue, it is hard not to laugh out loud at some of the parts that were not entirely intended for humor. However, if you can get past the uncountable high fives and the seriously ridiculous nicknames, then it provides for a great date movie.

Fireproof

Fireproof is the newest release from the creators of Facing the Giants. Fireproof is the story of a firefighter named Caleb (Kirk Cameron) and his wife, Catherine, and the struggles they face as a married couple. As the couple nears the brink of divorce, Caleb seeks counsel in his dad. His dad advises the couple to take the Love Dare, which is a 40 day devotional designed to re-awaken love. Fireproof is a clean movie with no profanity at all. It is full of twists and turns, comedy and romance. Fireproof is the perfect reminder to all couples to never leave your partner behind.

Iron Man

Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. is a genius inventor, especially in the field of weapons engineering. While on a trip to promote new weapons, Tony is captured and forced to build a weapon of detrimental force. Instead of building the desired weapon, he builds a high tech suit of armor and escapes. This act gives birth to one of America's greatest superheroes; Ironman. Ironman is an excellent mix of comedy and action. Do not miss the "special extra" after the credits!

Nights in Rodanthe

The extremely popular and exceptionally talented Nicholas Sparks has had yet another one of his best-selling novels come to life on the big screen. From same author as A Walk to Remember, Message in a Bottle, and The Notebook, the new release Nights in Rodanthe hit the box office on September 26th. Nights in Rodanthe is the story of a recently seperated, unhappily married woman played by Diane Lane that gets caught in a storm on the East Coast with a rich doctor (Richard Gere) who is just passing through town on important business. This is a classic love story of finding happiness with yourself and more importantly somebody that will bring that out in you. The movie had many differences from the book and I felt it lacked a sense of realness, even though Gere and Lane’s onscreen chemistry was captivating. This movie will bring out all of yours emotions, so don’t leave home without some Kleenexes, because Nicholas Sparks has done it again and brought many women to tears!

Eagle Eye in Review

In this action packed thriller Shia Labeouf plays the rebellious underachiever Jerry Shaw. Jerry has a twin brother who, unbeknownst to him, is involved in a top secret military experiment designed to monitor all communications in America. Unfortunately like all computerized military monitoring equipment this project takes matters into its own hand. The worst part about this movie is that it is very similar to the Will Smith blockbuster of a few years ago "I Robot". It is different in the fact that it's people being manipulated by a machine instead of machines being controlled by one. On a scale of one to ten i give this movie a seven because it is action packed and has some good humor moments but they lose points on originallity.

Office Space

The movie Office Space was chosen as our miscellaneous review. Office Space, released February 1999, is the story of Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston), a software engineer for Initech. Peter can not stand his job but must keep it in order to pay the bills. He is confronted by his eight bosses whenever he makes a mistake. Peter becomes so stressed that his girlfriend drags him to a hypnotist who she believes will be able to ease his stress at work. Upon being hypnotized, the hypnotist dies of a heart attack, leaving Peter in a complete state of apathy about his job, girlfriend, and bills. Peter quits going to work. He doesn’t quit, he doesn’t get fired, he just quits going. Office Space is a hilarious comedy about what happens when cubicle workers are pushed over the edge. The language used earns the movie an R rating.

Sex and the City

On September 23rd, women all around the country anticipated, and men dreaded the release of the box office hit Sex and the City on DVD. Based on the hit Television show that aired on HBO for 6 seasons, it is the story of Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), a writer of a sex column, and her 3 best friends, Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristen Davis). Sex and the City is the story of women looking for and finding love, without trying to lose themselves or their friendships. It is the ultimate chick flick, girls night movie, that men don’t want to waste their time watching. This movie will have you laughing and crying but most importantly you will finish the movie with a smile on your face. Although if the title doesn’t give it away, the “R” rating is a definite, and it is not a movie for young eyes. All in all this movie is great for the ladies but will make the men want to scream!

My Best Friend's Girl

The movie My Best Friend’s Girl was released in theatres Friday, September 19th. With a very popular comedic cast including Dane Cook, Kate Hudson, and Jason Biggs the release of this comedy was very highly anticipated. The main storyline of this film is, Dane Cooks character Tank gets paid by his best friend (Jason Biggs) to take out his best friends ex-girlfriend (Kate Hudson) to make her realize what she has thrown away, but it becomes the ultimate test of their friendship. Dane Cook was very funny in this movie although his character was very vulgar and sometimes hard to take because he was paid to make women have the worst night of their lives. This movie is really funny if you can get past the many crude things that come out of Dane Cooks mouth (like in most of his films). Kate Hudson brought some class to the film although it is different than many of her films in the past and her and Cook's on screen romance is fun and exciting. This film is definitely designed for the college age group and deserved its "R" rating.
