Saw V

Just in time for Halloween another Saw movie has made its way to the big screen! Saw V was released on October 24th, 2008 with many people all around anticipating what twists and turns the writer’s will think of next. Saw V started off with one its many bloody and gut wrenching character tests of life or death. However it wasn’t long into the movie before it was right on track from where it left off in Saw IV, where we found out the Detective Hoffman might have possibly been helping Jigsaw. Throughout the movie Agent Strahm
helps to answer many questions from previous movies in his struggle and research to find out the truth about Detective Hoffman. Like all Saw movies there are many scenes that might make your stomach uneasy but it definitely isn’t as bad as Saw movies in the past. Also you can be the judge on whether or not you like the somewhat twist and abrupt way they end this movie leaving you waiting around for Saw VI.

The Secret Life of Bees

The Secret Life of Bees is a heartwarming story about a young girl Lily (Dakota Fanning) who was raised by her father and her African American housekeeper Rosalene (Jennifer Hudson) set in the times of the Civil Rights Act. It is a beautiful story that will make you laugh and cry, and it truly shows the power of family and love. Based of the novel by Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees is definitely the must see movie of the season!

The Prestige

“Are you watching closely?” If you are watching “The Prestige”, then you better be. “The Prestige” stars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman with excellent supporting characters provided by Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson. It was directed by the very talented Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight). “The Prestige” is about two aspiring magicians (Bale and Jackman) who share a goal of wanting to be the best magician alive. The only problem is if one of them is the best magician in the world, then where does that leave the other? The rival magicians sabotage and destroy each other as much as possible. Consequently, it takes a huge toll on each of them. “The Prestige” is full of twists and tricks to keep you guessing until the very last second. It is rated PG-13 for some violence and disturbing images, so it might not be suitable for some of the younger viewers. However, if you can sneak away from the smaller children, then this one comes highly recommended. “The Prestige” is one of those rare movies that is actually fun to watch over and over again, because each time you do, you’ll probably catch something you missed before. Don’t just rent “The Prestige”, buy it.

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing is a classic movie that was released in 1987 but has never been far from peoples minds. It is the story of Frances "Baby" Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey, who can be considered somewhat of a "daddy's girl." In this film Baby and her family take a vacation to a wealthy resort where they spend the majority of the summer. During this time Baby begins to take dances lessons from and fall for a rebellious dancer named Johnny (Patrick Swayze). This is a timeless love story of two people caught in a forbidden love, because of stereotypes, lies, and social class. With the many famous movie quotes like: "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" and "Have the time of your life" this movie will be sure to have you dancing in your seat. It is definitely a movie that everybody must see, and that some people watch time and time again!!

No Country for Old Men

"No Country for Old Men" is a thrilling crime film from the Academy Award winning Joel and Ethan Coen ("Fargo", "O' Brother Where Art Thou?", "The Big Lebowski"). It was nominated for multiple Oscars, winning the award Best Picture among three others. Based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, No Country for Old Men, is a story of a man, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), who stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong. At the scene, he finds a briefcase full of money and a truck full of drugs. He takes the money and goes on the run from a hit man named Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem). The rest of the story is an intense, three-way chase between Moss, Chigurh, and a local sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones). The Coen Brothers deliver yet another instant classic with "No Country for Old Men", captivating the audience from start to finish. Although the film is not entirely action packed, it is sure to keep most anyone's eyes glued to the screen. "No Country for Old Men" is much more than just two hours of entertainment. It is the kind of film that will be considered one of the greatest of our time by the next generation.

Top Gun

"Top Gun" is a film from Tony Scott ("Enemy of the State", "True Romance"). It stars Top Cruise as a young pilot trainee in the Navy. He and his co-pilot, Goose (Anthony Edwards are quickly rising as the best team in the Navy training program. Through many trials and certainly a few errors, Maverick (Cruise) spends the movie finding out what it takes to be a true Navy pilot. "Top Gun" is a decent and certainly entertaining film, though in many parts, it falls prey to many 80's cliches. From music choices to some of the dialogue, it is hard not to laugh out loud at some of the parts that were not entirely intended for humor. However, if you can get past the uncountable high fives and the seriously ridiculous nicknames, then it provides for a great date movie.
